Vipassana and Religion
One of the most common misconceptions about vipassana meditation is that it is a religious practice.
Though it came about with Buddhism, was first taught by Gotama Buddha, and is largely practised by followers of the Buddhist way of life, just using the meditation technique cannot convert anyone to Buddhism. It only requires patience to learn. It is currently taught around the world, but there is still concern about the close relation between vipassana and Buddhism — I actually noticed this in people around me as well, and I know that the doubt sometimes holds people back from trying it.
The practice itself only involves focusing on your breathing and physical sensations, and people of all religions are welcome to attend courses and practice vipassana in day-to-day life. If the stigma of the practice lessened, it could be very useful in reducing the effects of anxiety and other extreme emotions.
